About the Root Chakra

The root chakra is the keel of the energetic body. In the traditional seven-chakra system, it sits at the base of the spine and governs everything that has to do with being safely, physically present in a body and a place. When the root is steady, the rest of the system has somewhere to stand. When the root is rattled, even the highest spiritual practices feel uncertain, like building a tower on sand. Working with root-chakra crystals is less about chasing a feeling and more about returning to one: the quiet, almost boring sense that you are here, you are okay, and the ground is holding you.

This center governs safety, survival, grounding, the body, the home, finances, and the felt sense of belonging in the physical world.

Signs the Root Chakra is open

You feel rooted, capable, and at home in your body. Money and stability are practical concerns rather than constant anxieties. Sleep comes easily.

Signs of imbalance

Persistent worry about basic security, restless sleep, lower-back tension, a feeling of being uprooted or "ungrounded," difficulty trusting that you will be okay.

Daily practices

  • Walk barefoot on grass, sand, or stone for ten minutes a day with the stone in your pocket.
  • Sit on the floor rather than a chair while meditating with the crystal in your lap.
  • Place a piece of black tourmaline or hematite by the front door of your home.
  • Breathe slowly into the lower belly while holding the stone, counting the exhale longer than the inhale.
